There are so many things that have become cliche in cop movies that were invented by this film. The French Connection is a must-see for anyone interested in what makes a good movie.

The movie is all about the smuggling of drugs into New York City by a suave Frenchman and his crew. The climax is a classic car chase that rivals the best of its kind in any movie. The pacing is fast, and the camera work keeps it all looking very real. The movie looks like it could have been shot by surveillance cameras on the five o’clock news, and that adds to the sense of realism.

Another great thing about the movie is that it’s not too talky. There are long stretches of the movie, almost an entire hour, where there is no dialogue. This doesn’t detract from the movie at all. It actually helps to convey a sense of the city, and it also lets the action scenes really pop.

The acting was top notch,  The french connection keep in touch especially from Gene Hackman. His performance as Popeye Doyle is a different kind of police officer, one who doesn’t believe in political correctness and doesn’t feel the milk of human kindness flowing through his veins. He’s a bad boy, and he’s one of the most memorable cops ever to appear on the big screen.

Don Ellis’s score is a masterpiece, and this first-ever release includes 20 minutes of deleted material that was never used in the movie. The score is a dissonant and experimental piece, but it fits right in with cutting-edge ’70s crime scores by Jerry Goldsmith, Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones, and others.

This is a terrific movie, and it deserves the accolades it received in 1971, including best picture and a Best Actor Oscar for Hackman. The movie is still a heart-pounding thrill ride, and it’s worth seeing again.
